From Clusters to Proto-Clusters: The Infrared Perspective on Environmental Galaxy Evolution
نویسندگان
چکیده
Environment is one of the primary drivers galaxy evolution; via multiple mechanisms, it can control critical process transforming galaxies from star forming to quiescent, commonly termed “quenching”. Despite its importance, however, we still do not have a clear view how environmentally-driven quenching proceeds even in most extreme environments: clusters and their progenitor proto-clusters. Recent advances infrared capabilities enabled transformative progress only identification these structures but detailed analyses quiescence, obscured formation, molecular gas (proto-)cluster across cosmic time. In this review, will discuss current state literature regarding (proto-)clusters observational, perspective. Our improved understanding environmental evolution comes unique observables distinct regimes near-, mid-, far-infrared, crucial push high redshift where massive growth dominated by highly extinct, infrared-bright galaxies.

Environmental effects on Gas and Galaxy Evolution in Clusters
The cluster environment is the site of important transformations in galaxies at a relatively recent cosmological epoch: the galactic morphological types and star formation activity have evolved significantly during the last few Gyrs. How is this related to the galactic gas content? The first part of this paper briefly presents the optical observations of galaxies in distant clusters, while the ...
متن کاملInfrared Observations of Galaxy Clusters
However evidence is growing for the presence of well evolved rich clusters and cluster galaxies at high redshift (above z=0.5-1; Dickinson 1997, Mushotzky and Loewenstein 1997), which sets a key constraint on galaxy evolution models and on structure formation models as well. After IRAS, which proved that starbursts emitted mostly in the infrared (Sanders & Mirabel 1996), ISOCAM is finding a str...
متن کاملGalaxy evolution in clusters from z = 1 to z = 0
The XMM–LSS project is detecting distant clusters of low mass, quite comparable in mass to the ones in the local universe. This allows a direct comparison of galaxy properties at different redshifts in " similar " clusters. We present here first results on the evolution of the reddest galaxies in 25 clusters/groups at 0.3 < ∼ z < ∼ 1.0 and for the whole galaxy population in the same clusters. T...
متن کاملOptical/Infrared Survey of Galaxy Clusters
In this contribution the ongoing effort to build a statistical sample of clusters of galaxies over a wide range of redshifts to study the evolution of clusters and member galaxies is reviewed. The starting point for this project has been the list of candidate clusters identified from the I-band EIS-WIDE survey data. Since the completion of this survey, new optical/infrared observations have bec...
متن کاملFar Infrared Emission from Galaxy Clusters and Early-Type Galaxies
Infrared emission has been detected from normal elliptical galaxies and from clusters of galaxies at 60μm and 100μm with the IRAS satellite. In both cases, the emission has the characteristics of cool dust with a temperature near 30K. For the elliptical galaxies, there is a correlation between the optical luminosities and the far infrared luminosities. The likely source of the dust in these sys...
